Spider-Man: No Way Home US Box Office Only $1M Away From Toppling Avatar

Jon Watt's MCU film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, is only $1 million away from overtaking James Cameron's Avatar at the U.S. box office.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is only $1 million away from overtaking Avatar at the U.S. box office. As the twenty-seventh film to take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Jon Watts’ final film in his Homecoming trilogy, No Way Home capitalizes on Phase Four’s multiverse concept. The film sees Tom Holland’s Peter Parker seek Doctor Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) help in making the world forget he’s Spider-Man. When the subsequent spell goes awry, a plethora of iconic characters from Sony’s past are brought into the MCU, including Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin, Alfred Molina's Doc Ock, Jamie Foxx's Electro, and, of course, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s webslingers.

Since its theatrical release on December 17, 2021, No Way Home has taken the box office by storm. Considering the film’s nostalgic appeal, this isn’t necessarily surprising but few could have predicted just how much of a success No Way Home would be in a year riddled with box office slumps. In less than ten days, the film crossed the $1 billion mark at the international box office and, in the same amount of time, became Sony’s highest-grossing movie ever in the US. In 2021, No Way Home accounted for 12% of the U.S.’s entire box office gross. Now, the blockbuster is well on its way to overtaking James Cameron’s Avatar at the domestic box office.(Visit Store: hipmodes.com)

As reported by Variety, No Way Home earned $7.1 million in its ninth weekend of release, bringing the North American box office gross to $759 million. This puts the film $1 million away from passing Avatar’s $760 million, which would make it the third-highest-grossing domestic release in history. Currently, the highest-grossing films in the U.S. are Avengers: Endgame (2019) with $858 million and Star War: The Force Awakens (2015) with $936 million.

With an additional $1 million in box office take, No Way Home will beat out Avatar in the U.S. but it has a way to go before it knocks off Star Wars domestically, and even further to go before it can touch Avatar internationally. As previously mentioned, No Way Home sits at over $1 billion globally. Avatar is the biggest film of all time with a worldwide gross of $2,847,246,203, followed by Avengers: Endgame and Titanic. No Way Home currently ranks sixth on that list.

Despite its lack of a Best Picture Oscar nomination, No Way Home represents a high point for superhero cinema. On top of being arguably Marvel’s most popular character of all time, Spider-Man helped to usher in the contemporary age of comic book movies via Sam Raimi’s film in 2002. By hearkening back to that film, No Way Home celebrates three generations of webslinging and movie going. As fans continue to see the film, it seems very likely its box office numbers will continue to rise as it inevitably overtakes Avatar stateside.
