Keoghan is part of the ensemble cast for Reeves' Dark Knight franchise reboot alongside Robert Pattinson in the titular role, Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as district attorney Gil Colson, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot. The Batman marks Keoghan's latest dive into the comic book genre following his performance in Marvel Cinematic Universe's Eternals as Druig.

The Batman is set in Bruce Wayne's second year of fighting crime as he uncovers a tangled web of corruption with ties to his family's past and grapples with a serial killer known as The Riddler targeting elite Gotham citizens, including himself. The film is set to be the first in a new shared universe set around the titular vigilante with Reeves and Warner Bros. currently in talks for the sequel and two spin-off TV shows in development for HBO Max. As questions abound for what the future holds for those in The Batman, Reeves may have already revealed an exciting future for one character.

While talking with TechRadar for the film, Matt Reeves offered some insight for Barry Keoghan's role in The Batman. Though keeping his specific connections under wraps, the director teased his appearance as part of a "really cool" cut scene taking place within Arkham Asylum. See what Reeves shared below:

"There were scenes we cut that I liked. In fact, there's a scene with the unseen prisoner (Keoghan), who appears at the end of the movie in Arkham [Asylum] with the Riddler. There was an earlier scene where Batman went to Arkham to try to profile the Riddler, and Barry is in that scene. It's a very cool scene, and I'm sure we'll we'll release the scene after the movie comes out, because it's a really cool deleted scene."

Given his celebrated villainous turns in The Killing of a Sacred Deer and The Green Knight, theories and speculation began swirling regarding Keoghan's casting for The Batman early in its development. Many took to believing that the Irish actor was set to be the franchise's Joker, though reports have since debunked this standing by listing him as an "Unseen Arkham Prisoner." Interestingly, his initial casting for the film stated Keoghan would be portraying Gotham City Police officer Stanley Merkel, known in the comics as Gordon's original partner and eventual victim of the Hangman during Batman: Dark Victory.

The biggest point of curiosity for Reeves' tease of Keoghan's cut scene in The Batman is how an "Unseen" character can contribute to a "really cool" scene. Though Keoghan is better known for his face than his voice, it seems possible the Eternals star is introduced with some menacing offscreen dialogue before appearing at the end with Paul Dano's Riddler as indicated by Reeves. Only time will tell when The Batman hits theaters on March 4.
