Kansas City Chiefs Chiefs fan donates Super Bowl tickets to Joe Burrow Hunger Relief Fund

A Kansas City Chiefs fan donated tickets for the team’s home opener at Arrowhead Stadium to help a fellow fan reach his goals.

Clayton Funk made a gutsy call at halftime during the AFC Championship Game last month.

With the Kansas City Chiefs up 21-10, the Missouri-based investment banker and ardent Chiefs fan bought three front-row, end zone seats for Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles, along with passes to the champions' pre-party and a three-night stay in a Beverly Hills hotel — a package valued at $52,000.

Then his beloved team lost to a Cincinnati Bengals comeback, courtesy of quarterback Joe Burrow.

"My first inclination was to sell them," Funk said, admitting his purchase was a little foolhardy after colleagues at a work conference made fun of him the next day.

But after chatting with Cincinnati firm Arcadia Towers, long-time clients with whom Funk had bet barbecue that the Chiefs would win (if the Bengals had lost, Arcadia would have sent Fun Skyline Chili), he was inspired to donate his Super Bowl package — tickets, party and hotel combined — to a local charity.

"They recommended the Joe Burrow Hunger Relief Fund," Funk said. "There’s a certain point at which somebody’s gonna benefit from this more than I would trying to sell these things."

Following Burrow's Heisman Trophy speech in 2019 highlighting southeast Ohio's food insecurity, the Athens County Food Pantry partnered with regional nonprofit The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio (FAO) to establish the Joe Burrow Hunger Relief Fund.

The charity was a natural fit for Funk's incredibly generous gift, FAO president Cara Brook said.

"Clayton talked about how rural southeast Ohio isn’t all that different from rural Kansas," she said. " A feeling of kinship with our region is a theme in many of the comments we hear from donors. It should be celebrated that the Bengals, this special quarterback and the Joe Burrow Hunger Relief Fund are bringing people together, unifying people."
